In our Emissions practice, BridgeNet provides full-service air quality analysis using FAA’s Emission and Dispersion Modeling System (EDMS). We have provided these services for large and small airports, as well as used our visualization services to graphically depict “before and after” of how a new technology procedure, using modern satellite-based technology, can reduce emissions.

One of BridgeNet’s Emissions practice areas is creating videos that depict aircraft movements. BridgeNet has created videos to show how implementing new ground and in flight procedures can reduce emissions. BridgeNet’s software has been used to generate videos showing two efforts, ASPIRE and AIRE which are explained below.

Emissions Inventory

Paine Field

 

BridgeNet International, working with Barnard Dunkelberg & Co, generated an emissions inventory for Paine Field in Everett, Washington. Paine Field is unique in that it is the airfield used by Boeing Corporation for aircraft on its maiden voyage from the factory. It has a unique role among general aviation airports, serving large, commercial service aircraft that normally use medium and large hub airports. The emissions inventory involved generating an inventory for existing conditions and for future conditions that include scheduled, commercial operations by regional-jet type aircraft. BridgeNet generated the inventory for one existing and two future years.

 

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport

 

BridgeNet International, working with Barnard Dunkelberg & Co generated an emissions inventory for the runway extension at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport as well as a greenhouse gas inventory. For the runway extension project, BridgeNet ran the EDMS model to determine changes in emissions for multiple future-year scenarios with different runway lengths. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is located in an area with mountainous terrain in the Colorado Mountains, home to world-famous ski resorts and recreational areas. With this in mind, it was important for BridgeNet to capture the environmental importance of any airport expansion.

 

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

 

BridgeNet International generated an emissions inventory for Sea-Tac Airport as part of a greenhouse gas inventory to determine Sea-Tac’s emissions contribution to environment, and serve as a vehicle for Sea-Tac to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. The emissions inventory included both aircraft and ground service equipment. A new technology procedure that Sea-Tac will use is the Constant Decent Approach, to be implemented in 2010.

ASIPRE

 

BridgeNet was on scene at San Francisco International Airport in September 2008 to support Air New Zealand’s ASPIRE Flight 1 arrive from Auckland, New Zealand and in November 2008 to for United Airlines first ASPIRE flight from Sydney, Australia to SFO. These historic flights embodied the goals of NextGen, to create improvements in aviation fuel-burning efficiency. The Asia & South Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions (ASPIRE) Air New Zealand Boeing-777 flew non-stop from Auckland to San Francisco utilizing green technology, including a constant decent approach that reduced CO2 emissions by 1,170 kg and saved 1,170 gallons of fuel. United Airline’s ASPIRE Flight 870 on a Boeing-747 saved 1,564 gallons of fuel and reduced its carbon emissions by 32,656 pounds through use of 11 fuel saving techniques.

 

AIRE

 

BridgeNet’s BridgeXtreme 3D was used by the Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile, or DGAC, to create a 3D video of Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE) operations, the European Union and United State’s effort to reduce carbon emissions on transatlantic flights. The video depicts an Air France 747 flight using AIRE initiatives to fly from Paris to Miami, including single-engine taxi for departure and arrival, continuous climb on departure, and executing a tailored arrival. DCAG has also used BridgeXtreme’s 3D capabilities to create multiple presentations for the French Parliament, illustrating how aircraft fly in existing airspace.
